What is cash-flow forecast?

Nella builds a rolling three and six-month cash-flow projection from your accounting data. It starts with your opening cash from the latest balance sheet, applies a monthly operating cash flow based on your recent run-rate, and subtracts scheduled tax payments where a confirmed due date exists. Each month’s closing balance becomes the next month’s opening balance, so you see the shape of the next two quarters rather than a single number.

How it works

What sits behind the number.

Opening cash

Taken from the most recent balance sheet in your ledger.

Operating cash flow

A run-rate from your recent months’ net profit, with depreciation added back, because depreciation reduces profit without moving cash.

Scheduled tax

VAT and corporation tax liabilities from the balance sheet, dated against confirmed filing and payment dates.

Carried forward

Each month’s closing balance opens the next, which is what turns a single figure into a trajectory.

What it does not do

Stated plainly, because a figure you can trust is one whose limits you know.

  • Working capital is held steady. The forecast does not speculate about when a specific invoice will be collected or paid, so debtor and creditor balances are treated as constant.
  • The run-rate is built from a short window of recent history, so an unusual month carries more weight than it would in a longer series.
  • Tax outflows are scheduled only where a confirmed due date exists. Nella never invents a date to make the projection look complete.
  • It is indirect rather than invoice-level: directional cash planning, not a guarantee, and not a substitute for a forecast your accountant builds with you.

The projection is derived from your ledger, not from a bank connection. It reflects what has been recorded, so it is only as current as your bookkeeping — and Nella tells you when the underlying data is stale rather than projecting confidently from old figures.

Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers; a qualified accountant at AccTek advises you on them. When a question needs professional judgement, Nella points you to the team.

Where the data comes from

Nella connects read-only to Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent. It cannot create, edit or delete anything in your books. How deeply it reads varies by platform — see the supported-platform table — and how your data is handled is set out in full.
