How does Nella work with QuickBooks?
Nella connects to QuickBooks Online in read-only mode through Intuit’s own secure sign-in, then answers plain-English questions about your live figures — cashflow and runway, debtor and creditor days, VAT and tax dates, profit and margin, and movements down to individual accounts and journals. It reads your QuickBooks data and cannot create, edit or delete anything in your books.
What it reads
What Nella reads from QuickBooks
- Monthly profit and loss, by section and by account
- Balance sheet, plus QuickBooks’ own trial balance report
- Your full chart of accounts, read in a single query
- General ledger detail down to transaction level, including manual journal entries
- Receivables and payables position, with an ageing view of who owes you what
- Cleared and uncleared bank transactions, so unreconciled items are visible rather than silent
- Organisation settings, including your VAT registration status and financial year end
Nella connects to QuickBooks Online. QuickBooks Desktop is a different product and is not supported. Because QuickBooks exposes journal entries to read-only apps, Nella can see manual journals here that are not visible on some other ledgers — useful when a figure moved because of an adjustment rather than a transaction. QuickBooks account numbers are optional and often left blank, so Nella keys on the account itself rather than a number that may not exist.
In practice
Questions you can ask
- “How much cash will I have at the end of next month?”
- “Which customers owe me the most, and how late are they?”
- “What journals were posted this month, and by whom?”
- “What is my gross margin this quarter versus last?”
- “When is my next VAT return due, and what period does it cover?”
- “How much is still sitting unreconciled in the bank account?”

The boundary
What Nella cannot do in QuickBooks
The connection is read-only by design, so there is a fixed list of things Nella cannot do in QuickBooks — not as a setting you could change, but because the permission is never requested.
- Create, edit, void or delete invoices, bills, credit notes or journal entries
- Match or reconcile bank transactions, or change how anything is categorised
- File a VAT return, or submit anything to HMRC or Companies House
- Move money, pay a supplier or set up a payment
- Change your chart of accounts, company settings or user permissions
