How does Nella work with Xero?

Nella connects to Xero in read-only mode through Xero’s own secure sign-in, then answers plain-English questions about your live figures — cashflow and runway, debtor and creditor days, VAT and tax dates, profit and margin. It reads your Xero data and cannot create, edit or delete anything in your books.

  • Monthly profit and loss, by section and by account
  • Balance sheet, trial balance and your full chart of accounts
  • Receivables and payables position, with debtor and creditor days
  • Sales concentration — how much of your income sits with one customer
  • Supplier concentration on the purchase side
  • Bank feed coverage, so gaps in reconciled data are visible rather than silent
  • Organisation settings, including your VAT registration status and year end

Nella reads what is recorded in Xero. If invoices are unentered or the bank feed is behind, the figures reflect that — the same as any report you would run yourself. Nella flags the gaps it can see in feed coverage, but it cannot infer transactions that were never entered. One Xero-specific limit worth knowing: manual journals are not currently readable on this connection tier, so transaction-level detail is built from bank transactions and invoices. Reported totals are unaffected.

What Nella cannot do in Xero

The connection is read-only by design, so there is a fixed list of things Nella cannot do in Xero — not as a setting you could change, but because the permission is never requested.

  • Create, edit, void or delete invoices, bills, credit notes or journals
  • Reconcile bank transactions or change how anything is coded
  • File a VAT return, or submit anything to HMRC or Companies House
  • Move money, pay a supplier or set up a payment
  • Change your chart of accounts, settings or user permissions

FAQ

Questions about Xero and Nella

Does Nella need write access to my Xero account?
No. Nella requests read-only access and nothing else. The permission to create, edit or delete anything in Xero is never asked for, so it cannot be granted by accident.
Will Nella change anything in my Xero books?
No. Nella cannot create, edit, void or delete invoices, bills, journals or bank transactions, and it cannot reconcile or recode anything. It reads your figures and answers questions about them.
How do I disconnect Nella from Xero?
Revoke access from Xero’s own connected apps settings, exactly as you would for any other connected application. Nella loses access immediately, and you can ask for your data to be deleted at the same time.
Does Nella work with multiple Xero organisations?
You choose which organisation to connect when you grant access. If you run more than one, connect the one you want Nella to answer about.
Is my Xero data used to train AI models?
No. Your figures are never used to train AI models. They are used to answer your questions and build your insight pack, and nothing else.
Can Nella tell me what to do about my numbers?
No. Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers; a qualified accountant at AccTek advises you on them, and Nella points you to the team when a question needs professional judgement.
