How does Nella work with Claude?

The Nella connector lets Claude answer from your own live accounting data rather than general knowledge. Ask about cashflow, profit or tax dates inside Claude and the answer comes from your connected ledger, read-only. Nella connects to Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage Business Cloud or FreeAgent. Claude talks to Nella; Nella holds the read-only connection to your accounting software.

How to connect Claude

1 · Connect your accounting software

Read-only, through your provider’s own secure sign-in.

2 · Add the Nella connector

Add Nella as a connector in Claude and sign in to link it to your Nella account. Nella uses OAuth 2.1: Claude receives a scoped, read-only access token, never your Nella password and never your accounting platform credentials. You can disconnect at any time from Claude’s Connectors settings.

3 · Ask about your numbers

Ask inside Claude and answers come from your live figures.

What Nella cannot do in Claude

The connection is read-only by design, so there is a fixed list of things Nella cannot do in Claude — not as a setting you could change, but because the permission is never requested.

  • Change anything in your accounting software — the connection is read-only
  • Reach your figures without you signing in to link the connector
  • Give accounting or tax advice
  • File anything with HMRC or Companies House
  • Move money — Nella initiates no payments of any kind

What it can do

The tools Claude can call

Twenty-five tools, every one read-only. Grouped by the question they answer.

Cash

  • Get cash position — Cash at bank, runway, debtor and creditor days, and the balance sheet summary.
  • Get cash-flow forecast — A 13-week forecast: receipts, payments, payroll and tax week by week, the lowest week, and whether cash goes negative.
  • Get historical cash flow and burn analysis — Twelve months of cash movement — peaks, troughs, burn or build, and volatility.
  • Can I afford payroll this month? — Whether this month’s payroll clears against your current cash.
  • Run a cash-flow what-if — Model a hire, a lost or won client, a price change or a one-off spend against your forecast, side by side with the baseline.

Profit, KPIs and performance

  • Get profit and loss — Revenue, cost of sales, gross profit, expenses and net profit — and what moved.
  • Get KPI dashboard — Margins, debtor and creditor days, current ratio and runway.
  • Budget vs actual — Per-account variance against your set budget.

Reading the answers

What the figures mean

Every figure is ledger-derived. Cash and runway come from your accounting software, not from your bank. If your bank feed has not been reconciled, the figures reflect that, and Nella says so rather than presenting stale data as current.

Absence is not zero. Where Nella holds no data for a period, it says the period is not held. A gap in what has been collected is never reported as a month with no sales or no customers.

Every answer carries a data-freshness note and, where relevant, a list of limitations. They are the difference between a number and an answer.

Coverage

What each accounting platform supports

All four accounting platforms are supported, but they are not equivalent — the underlying APIs differ in what they expose.

  • QuickBooks Online — The deepest integration, and the only platform where manual journals are readable.
  • Xero — A notch below. Manual journals sit behind a Xero tier AccTek does not hold; everything else is available.
  • Sage Business Cloud — Thinner than the two above.
  • FreeAgent — Reporting level only — profit and loss, balance sheet, AR/AP, reconciliation status and trends.

Supplier concentration figures are unavailable on FreeAgent and Sage. Where a tool cannot answer on your platform, it says so rather than returning a partial figure without explanation.

Your data

How Nella handles your data in Claude

Who holds your data. Nella Finance AI Ltd (company 17336736), a UK company, registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office under reference ZC224350.

What is accessed. Financial records from the accounting platform you connected, under the authorisation you granted to Nella: contacts, organisation settings, invoices and bills, bank transactions, payments, budgets and the standard reports. Where you have granted payroll access, Nella reads employee pay setup and pay-run amounts — this is what “Can I afford payroll this month?” is calculated from. Claude receives only the specific answer to the question you asked, not a copy of your ledger.

Sub-processors. Anthropic processes the content of your questions and Nella’s answers in order to generate responses. The full, maintained list is published at nellafinance.co.uk/subprocessors, with 30 days’ notice before any new sub-processor begins processing personal data.

Your accounting credentials. Held by Nella, encrypted. Never passed to Claude. Full detail on the privacy policy and security and data pages.

FAQ

Questions about Claude and Nella

Is the Claude connector included on the free plan?
It is included during the 60-day trial and on Nella Paid. It is not included on Nella Lite. See plans and pricing.
Does Claude get access to my accounting software?
No. The connector talks to Nella, not to your ledger. Nella holds the read-only connection and answers from it, so your accounting software is never exposed directly.
Can it change anything in my books?
No. The connection to your accounting software is read-only on every channel.
How is this different from just asking Claude about accounting?
Without the connector, Claude answers from general knowledge and has never seen your figures. With it, answers come from your own live ledger.
Does Nella give tax advice in Claude?
No. Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice.
A tool says a period is not held. Is something broken?
No. Nella has not collected that month yet. This is a gap in collection, not a month with no activity, and it usually resolves on the next scheduled refresh.
A figure looks different from my accounting dashboard.
The ledger-side unreconciled count is not the same population as your accounting app’s dashboard count. They measure different things and will not always match. If a figure still looks wrong, email support and we will trace it back to the ledger entries it came from.
Why are supplier figures missing?
Expected on FreeAgent and Sage — those APIs do not expose them. Nella says so rather than reporting a gap as nil.
