How does Nella work with FreeAgent?

Nella connects to FreeAgent in read-only mode through FreeAgent’s own secure sign-in, then answers plain-English questions about your live figures — cashflow and runway, profit and margin, and how your figures have moved month by month. It reads your FreeAgent data and cannot create, edit or delete anything in your books.

Nella’s FreeAgent connection reads profit and loss, balance sheet, a category-level chart of accounts and a summary trial balance, reconciliation status and monthly trends. Some of this is partial by design — FreeAgent’s trial balance gives totals without a debit and credit split, and several account groups arrive without a category over the API — so Nella shows what it can and says where a figure is incomplete. Two things are not read yet: transaction-level ledger lines, and aged receivables and payables. For those, Nella tells you it cannot assess them rather than implying nothing is owed.

You are sent to FreeAgent’s own secure sign-in. Nella never sees or stores your FreeAgent password.

2 · Grant read access

Approve read-only access to your FreeAgent account. Nella does not request permission to write.

What Nella cannot do in FreeAgent

The connection is read-only by design, so there is a fixed list of things Nella cannot do in FreeAgent — not as a setting you could change, but because the permission is never requested.

  • Create, edit, void or delete invoices, bills, expenses or journals
  • Explain or reconcile bank transactions, or change how anything is categorised
  • File a VAT return, or submit anything to HMRC or Companies House
  • Move money, pay a supplier or set up a payment
  • Change your accounts, settings or user permissions

Questions about FreeAgent and Nella

Does Nella need write access to my FreeAgent account?
No. Nella requests read-only access and nothing else. The permission to create, edit or delete anything in FreeAgent is never asked for, so it cannot be granted by accident.
What can Nella read from FreeAgent?
Profit and loss, balance sheet, a category-level chart of accounts and a summary trial balance, bank reconciliation status and month-by-month trends. Some of this is partial — the trial balance is totals only, without a debit and credit split. Transaction-level ledger lines and aged receivables and payables are not read yet, and Nella says so rather than implying nothing is owed.
Is the FreeAgent integration as deep as the Xero one?
Getting closer. FreeAgent now has a category-level chart of accounts and a summary trial balance alongside the reporting figures. What is still missing versus Xero and QuickBooks is transaction-level ledger lines and aged receivables and payables. Those are on the roadmap and are not current capability.
How do I disconnect Nella from FreeAgent?
Revoke access from FreeAgent’s own connected apps settings, exactly as you would for any other application. Nella loses access immediately, and you can ask for your data to be deleted at the same time.
Is my FreeAgent data used to train AI models?
No. Your figures are never used to train AI models. They are used to answer your questions and build your insight pack, and nothing else.
Can Nella tell me what to do about my numbers?
No. Nella provides financial information and education, not accounting or tax advice. Nella shows you the numbers; a qualified accountant at AccTek advises you on them, and Nella points you to the team when a question needs professional judgement.
